Simple solution for Tesla key situation during surfing session

Prior to getting Tesla, I looked into how I could lock the car during everyday surfing session. Tesla’s card key was little too big to fit in my wetsuit pocket, which I used to put my physical key for my previous vehicle.

My original solution was a third party app for my water proof Apple Watch, called Watch app for Tesla by Kim Hansen, and it has been working except for twice in Huntington Beach (south side of the pier parking lot). At the time of two incidents, this third party app stopped syncing with the car, and I needed to get ride back home and all that nonsense. I did tried to sync the app with Tesla but no luck at all.

After the 2nd time, I decided to have a plan B. Some ideas for my plan B was:

  • Melting Tesla card key and create my own smaller card key. Example if you are interested - here to YouTube or

  • Create a key ring (or buy one). If interested, here for YouTube or here for Amazon.

Well, I ordered extra Tesla card keys for this project, and I did melt one of the keys with acetone that I picked up at a nearby Home Depot. But, I didn’t even need to do that after all.

So much simpler solution was just making a hole using a drill, put a string, and that was it. I guess there may be others who are wondering how to lock Tesla when you enjoy any kind of water sports. This could work for you, too.

Some pictures so you can see where I drilled a hole (and I didn’t hit the RFID chip).
